The Last Goodbye

It was the summer of 1995, and Emily had just graduated from high school. She had a bright future ahead of her, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that something was missing. That something was Adam, her childhood sweetheart.

They had been together since they were ten years old, but things had started to change over the past year. Adam had become distant and Emily couldn't figure out why. She had tried talking to him, but he always brushed her off.

One day, Emily decided to confront Adam. She drove to his house and waited for him to come out. When he did, she saw that he had tears in his eyes. He told her that he had joined the army and was leaving for basic training in two days.

Emily was devastated. She couldn't imagine life without Adam. He was her rock, her everything. They spent the next two days together, making the most of their time. They went to the beach, watched movies, and talked about their future.

On the morning of Adam's departure, Emily woke up early to say goodbye. They hugged each other tightly, both trying to hold back tears. As Adam got into the car, Emily handed him a letter. She told him not to open it until he got to basic training.

The next few months were tough for Emily. She missed Adam terribly, but she kept herself busy with college applications and volunteering. One day, she received a letter from Adam. He had just finished basic training and was about to be deployed overseas.

In his letter, Adam told Emily that he loved her more than anything in the world. He said that he had been distant because he didn't want to burden her with his worries about the army. He also told her that he had read her letter every day since he left.

Over the next year, Emily and Adam wrote each other letters every week. They talked about everything from their hopes and dreams to the mundane details of their daily lives. They also talked about their future together, about getting married and starting a family.

Then, one day, Emily received a letter from the army. Adam had been killed in action. Emily was devastated. She felt like her world had ended. But then she remembered the letter she had given Adam on the day he left. She went to her room and opened the envelope that had been returned to her.

In the letter, Emily had written about all the things she loved about Adam. She had told him how proud she was of him for serving his country, and how much she missed him. She had also told him that she would love him forever, no matter what.

As Emily read the letter, tears streamed down her face. She knew that this was the last goodbye. But she also knew that she would never forget Adam, and that he would always hold a special place in her Heart Years passed, but Emily never forgot Adam. She went on with her life, got married, had children, and even grandchildren, but her love for Adam remained. Every year on the anniversary of his death, she would visit his grave and talk to him as if he was still there.

One day, while Emily was visiting Adam's grave, she noticed a young soldier walking towards her. He looked familiar, but Emily couldn't place him. As he approached her, he introduced himself as Michael, Adam's best friend in the army.

Michael told Emily that Adam had talked about her all the time in their letters. He said that Adam loved her more than anything and that he had asked Michael to find her and deliver a message. Michael handed Emily a letter and told her that he had to go.

Emily opened the letter, and tears filled her eyes. It was from Adam, written just a few weeks before his death. In the letter, Adam had told Emily that he knew he was going to die, but he wanted her to know that he would always love her. He asked her to be happy and to remember the good times they had together.

Emily sat there, staring at the letter, trying to make sense of her emotions. She felt a sense of closure, but also a sense of sadness. She realized that she would never fully move on from Adam, but she also knew that she had to keep living her life.

As Emily walked away from the grave, she looked up at the sky and whispered, "I love you, Adam. Rest in peace." She knew that this was truly the last goodbye, but she also knew that Adam would always be with her, in her memories and in her heart
